Early Career Engineer Luncheon

April 18th, 2013

If you're an Early Career Engineer, please come and join us at the ASME section luncheon on Th. April 18th, at 11:30 a.m. The luncheon will be held at the Whitewater Grille, 355 River Parkway, in Idaho Falls.

Our speakers are BYU-ID students. Their presentation will focus on "A sounding rocket was designed and manufactured for an intercollegiate competition. The goal is for the rocket to achieve exactly 10,000ft above ground level with a 10lb payload and be recovered in operable condition. The competition awards are given based on a point system with more points being earned for student designs as opposed to commercially bought components. The students were divided into four teams; propulsion, structure, recovery, and outreach. Each team was required to design their systems individually. All systems were integrated together upon completion. The structure team used aluminum, wood, plastic, and cardboard to create the body and compartments for each component. The propulsion team created an aluminum motor casing and casting methods for the ammonium perchlorate/aluminum powder fuel. The recovery team designed a two stage system employing a smaller drag chute and a larger main chute. The outreach team created a program to bring to local schools, teach them about science and get them excited about engineering. Students from freshman to seniors collaborated to remain in budget and on time for competition. Final results of test launches are still pending."

If you are not an early career engineer, then you are welcome to attend the luncheon but you need to pay for your own lunch. Please RSVP by Tu., April 16th (send an E-mail to Ali Siahpush siahpush.ali@gmail.com).

Workshop: Applying Engineering Codes and Standards

Friday, May 11th, 2012

The Idaho Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers is hosting a workshop on when and how to invoke various codes and standards into the engineering process. Engineering assumptions and risk assessments must be carefully scrutinized to ensure the most effective path is being selected. There is usually some gray area where the engineering team has to decide which parts of a code to follow and which parts to take an exception to in their requirements documents.

This workshop is open to all interested parties and provides 8 PDH credits. For compelte information, visit our course information page.

Hand Pumps for Haiti Benefit

December 2, 2011

A benefit for ASME Idaho Chapter Hand Pumps for Haiti effort.

The event is a fundraiser to support our humanitarian efforts in Les Anglais, Haiti. The Idaho section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) endeavors to equip and train local plumbers to maintain the pumps that provide access to water wells in Les Anglais, Haiti. These actions would resolve issues with wells and pumps installed by aid agencies with good intentions during past relief efforts. Wells are drilled and pumps are installed, and then they are left to degenerate to a state of uselessness for lack of simple maintenance measures.

Location:
Diversified Metal Products
3710 North Yellowstone Highway
Idaho Falls, ID 83401

Date:
Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Time:
5:30 - 6:30 - Social hour with complimentary heavy hors d'ouerves and a cash bar
6:30 - Hand Pumps for Haiti presentation by Karen Moore

The event is free, but donations are encouraged.

Volunteers Needed for 2011 Idaho TECH: Mars Rover Challenge

April 9th, 2011

Idaho TECH is a wonderful educational science & engineering program that enables 4th, 5th and 6th grade student teams to design and construct motorized Mars Rover models from LEGO’s. Each team of 4-6 students test their Rover in one of three Preliminary Design Competitions, located in Idaho Falls, Meridian, or Moscow. It is an awesome program that’s really fun to be involved with!!

This is where you come in. Idaho TECH is not possible without wonderful volunteers like you that donate their time to help judge at each competition. I hope you want to be one of these wonderful volunteers at the Idaho Falls competition on Saturday, April 9, 2011. Did I mention that you would receive FREE pizza and beverages at the competition??

Here are the details --- during the competition, each team demonstrates their Rover’s capabilities on five different courses designed to measure speed, climbing skill, rock collection ability, and weight, as well as overall teamwork skills (“blind driving”). Each team also gives a poster presentation with a display that highlights the Engineering Design Process, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of their Rover. Finally, teams submit lab notebooks that document their experiences during the design process. We need your help to judge these seven events during the Idaho Falls Competition!!

I’m sure you are very eager to see these LEGO Rovers in action!! The judged events at the competition will last from 8:30am until approximately 4:00pm at Taylor’s Crossing Public Charter School in Idaho Falls, ID. If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out the volunteer form at your earliest convenience and email to idahoTECH@uidaho.edu. You will be able to indicate a preference for one or more of the seven events listed above on your form.

If you know anyone else who might be interested, please pass this request along. To sign up or for questions, please contact Angela Banks at angelaf@uidaho.edu, (208) 885-6438.

Volunteer sought for pump analysis for wells in Haiti

Engineers Without Borders (EWB) in Haiti is looking for a mechanical engineer to help select a replacement pump for water wells in Les Anglais, Haiti.

The request from EWB:
I'm wondering if ASME will be in any condition to examine the possibility of doing some hand pump replacement for Les Anglais in 2011. The pumps are all starting to break down, perfectly timed with the cholera outbreak in the town when safe water is most needed. I'm still convinced these are the wrong pumps for the community because you can't do any basic maintenance on them without pulling them from the well, a feat requiring a big truck and heavy equipment, i.e. lots of money to repair stupid little things like connecting rods, bushings, and seals.

I'm not sure whether the right kind of hand pumps are readily available these days in Haiti, given there are many borehole programs as part of the cholera response, but it would be worth a look. I think it would just mean one ME spending some time on the internet to select candidate pumps (I can provide some background from earlier searches, or for that matter I can select if you don't have anyone from ASME interested) and then following up to get availability in Haiti.

For more information and to volunteer, contact Karen Moore (526-8852, karen.moore@inl.gov).

Tour of the Center for Advanced Energy Studies

Computer Assisted Virtual Environment

The Idaho section is offering a tour of the Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES) Computer Assisted Virtual Environment (CAVE).

Where: CAES building, room 211, 995 University Blvd., Idaho Falls
When: Wednesday, January 19, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.

The tour is limited to 20 participants, so please RSVP to Ed Harvego (526-9544, edwin.harvego@inl.gov).

Some background information about the CAES CAVE: Research at Idaho National Laboratory and the Center for Advanced Energy Studies is taking on another dimension — the third dimension, to be precise. CAES is home to a new 3-D computer-assisted virtual environment — or CAVE — that allows researchers to literally walk into their data and examine it. Such a tool brings data to life, akin to being able to feed blueprints into a computer and then walk around the virtual house. CAES is the only facility in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming with a CAVE of this kind.

Since its installation, the CAVE has been used by scientists and engineers working on a variety of projects, including storing carbon dioxide underground, and by teams to train Advanced Test Reactor staff, orient subcontractors and consider new designs. Now, Hollywood movie studios aren’t the only ones embracing 3-D technology. With the CAVE’s Mechdyne Flex technology, researchers can see how a protein catalyst is organized or look over the nuts and bolts inside INL’s Advanced Test Reactor facility.

The four-paneled system uses rear projection to display computer graphics on three walls and the floor. By wearing stereo glasses to create depth perception and holding a “wand” to manipulate and control data, users can tour a building still under design, plot a new transmission route, open a valve or delve into the core of a nuclear reactor.

Room 350a in the Tingey Administration Bldg. at University Place
1776 Science Center Drive, Idaho Falls

• Speaker: Dr. Carl Austin.

• Topic: Geothermal Energy.

ABSTRACT

THE CARE AND FEEDING OF A GEOTHERMAL RESERVOIR
To have a successful geothermal power project you need a reservoir volume measured in cubic miles that includes a heat source, a fluid to move the heat from where it is to where you want it, a fracture system that allows the fluid to flow at a high rate from the reservoir into the wells drilled to produce the hot fluids, and a method of disposing of the spent fluids in an environmentally acceptable manner. Geothermal power production is an attractive clean energy source, with a typical reservoir productive life span measured in centuries. As an example of this the Big Geysers geothermal system in northern California currently produces about 1000 MWe and the reservoir, which went on line in the late 1950s, has enough heat in it today to last another 500 years. The problem the geothermal industry faces today, beyond a simple lack of trained and experienced exploration geologists, is the almost complete lack of understanding within the industry of what is going on in the geothermal reservoir that is being produced. Geothermal companies have ruined literally hundreds of deep expensive wells by the misapplication of Petroleum Engineering technology to the drilling, well completion and production of high temperature hydrothermal fluid systems. In the presentation this evening we will take a quick look at some of the major reservoir engineering variables that must be dealt with if a geothermal production project expects to be successful. All told, there are about 18 mechanical and chemical factors that must be evaluated and controlled if geothermal production is to last for very many years. This evening we will touch on: autobrecciation, thermal shock, drilling mud problems, artificial fractures, the introduction of oxygen, and the effects of such variables as pH, temperature, chemical variations with time and depth, hydraulic switching and the like. The ability to operate a geothermal reservoir successfully for spans of time measured in centuries is a tremendous challenge to the engineering community today.

SPEAKER

DR. CARL F. AUSTIN
   • Degrees in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering and a PhD in Geological Engineering.
   • Member Tau Beta Pi (Utah Alpha 1954).
   • Received the Geothermal Pioneer Award given by the Geothermal Resources Council.
   • Has received numerous awards and government medals and holds a number of patents.

Author or Co-author of 114 government publications and 56 open literature publications. The principal subjects of these are rock mechanics, explosives, and geothermal technology.
Registered Professional Geologist.
Has taught undergraduate and graduate classes for various colleges and universities.
Has been involved in and conducted mineral and geothermal exploration and development for over 50 years and was the creator of and project manager for the Coso Geothermal Project which involved the largest drilling campaign in the United States at that time. The Coso Geothermal Project included the construction of 9 geothermal turbines capable of 30 MWe output each with the Coso Geothermal Project making 270 MWe being the 2nd largest geothermal complex in the U.S. and the 5th largest in the world when it went on line.
At present Dr. Austin is the Chief Scientist for Eureka Green Systems LLC, a geothermal exploration and development group, is co-owner of Twilight Mining LLC and with his wife lives on a ranch close to the Utah-Nevada border with Idaho where they run Angus cattle on about 4,000 acres.

University Place, CHE-207 1784 Science Center Drive Idaho Falls, ID 83402

To Register:

COST

$2000 for ASME members, $2200 for non members

• Register by May 8 to receive a $200 discount ($1800 for ASME members, $2000 for non members). A minimum of 12 students must register by May 8 or the class will be cancelled.

• Each student will receive a copy of the ASME B31.3 Process Piping Codebook. Students should bring a calculator.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Piping engineers and designers who need an understanding of the requirements for compliance and the trends of Code changes for piping design and analysis, fabrication, examination, and testing.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The lack of commentary, or historical perspective, regarding the B31.3 Code requirements for process piping design and construction is an obstacle to the designer, manufacturer, fabricator, supplier, erector, examiner, inspector, and owner who want to provide a safe and economical piping system. This intensive four day course, through the use of hundreds of examples shown and personal experiences of the instructors, demonstrates how the B31.3 Code has been correctly and incorrectly applied. This seminar explains the principle intentions of the Code and why the Code is not a handbook. Attendees come away from this seminar with a clear understanding of how piping systems fail and what the Code requires the designer, manufacturer, fabricator, supplier, erector, examiner, inspector and owner to do to prevent such failures. The focus of the seminar is to enhance participants’ understanding and application of the B31.3 Code. Instruction is further enhanced by in-class problem solving, directly applying the rules and equations of the B31.3 Code for specific design and operating conditions to illustrate correct applications.

INSTRUCTOR

Glynn E. Woods, P.E., Course Director, is a practicing piping engineer with experience in piping design, stress analysis, supports, piping failure analysis, as well as piping component design, analysis and testing. For more than 35 years he has been providing this piping design expertise in new and operating petrochemical facilities. The piping component design, analysis and testing experience involved assisting piping component manufacturers to gain pressure design Code compliance for their product. Mr. Woods is a member of the ASME B31.3 Process Piping Code Committee.
