4.Fall BBQ/Social
  • September 19th, 2013 at Tauphas Park Shelter, Nate to help cooking, Alex to bring the Trebuchet, Joe to be responsible for advertisement with help from Nathan and the BYU-I student section.
5.Plant Tour
  • Melaleuca? Joe will ask Michael Clark for an update on this.
6.Short Course
  • One Day Pump course? We need at least 10 people if we charge $700. Try to get the registration over before the fiscal year. The class would be held in October. Needs to be Monday thru Thursday.
7.District D Call-in
  • August 14th. Tony Crawford.
8.Section Leader Training
  • Portland, OR. September 20, 21. Possible members to go: Alex Goodhue, Nathan Carlson, and Steve Reese.
9.UBS Account Transfer
  • Ken Bateman is trying to get the money out of the account and moved to our new consolidated Chase account.

Tom Cooley
Steve Eliason

Discussion Items:
1.Annual Banquet Review
  • The banquet cost about the same as last year. The format was good and reports were that the non-engineer guests enjoyed the presentations more than the more technical ones held in years past. Tentatively the committee agreed that a similar format for next year would work well.
2.BYU-Idaho Student Section Report
  • They increasing their membership over the last couple of semesters. They have had several small “for-fun” contests including: egg drop, water bottle rocket, and water balloon launcher. The sounding rocket project has been a big success. It took a while to work through a number of fuel and nozzle problems, but during the month of June the successfully tested a motor followed immediately by a successful rocket launch. They will build upon this success during the next few months and plan on participating in the competition in Utah next summer (their successful launch was not it time for this year’s competition).
3.Status of Early Career Forum grant application
  • A grant was applied for in April. According to Dennis Armstrong of District D, these grants have not yet been awarded and we are still in the running.
4.Early Career Seminar
  • The next Early Career Seminar will be held July 22, 23, or 24. Ali will firm up this date soon. Joe will be on vacation and not able to help with advertising. Ali will submit the information to Sarah Robertson at INL and Tony will confirm with Sarah that it is a legitimate advertisement. Tony will also use the ASME Roster to distribute an advertisement to the entire Section.
5.Fall BBQ/Social Preparation
  • It appears that the key to a good high school student participation is to actually get in front of the students in their class room or at least to get the teacher’s to talk it up in their classes. Aaron said that one of their student section members graduated from an Idaho Falls HS and would be willing to go back and advertise it there.
6.Next Plant Tour
  • Nathan suggested Melaleuca and Michael said he had a contact there and would check with them.
7.Short Courses
  • Over the past month or so Michael Clark has been in touch with Mike Volk who conducts training seminars on pumps. These seminars are typically three days in length and cost $1500. Michael asked if he would be willing to conduct a one day seminar in Idaho Falls for a flat fee, and Mr. Volk said was willing to discuss such an option. The idea is that if we could put on a one day seminar for $500 or $600 per attendee we might be able to get quite a few more attendees given the reduced training budgets at INL and other firms.
8.PE Exam Preparation Course
  • During the past month Tony had contacted the State Board and learned that only about 12 mechanical engineers per year take the exam in Idaho. This didn’t seem like a large enough customer base to make a preparation course feasible and so the concept was tabled.
9.New ASME.org
  • All members of ASME who have previously created a profile on the ASME.ORG site need to do so again. There is now a different format.
10.Account transfers
  • The money transfer from the UBS account to the centralized ASME Chase account has not yet occurred. UBS has been directed to make this transfer but they are slow to respond. ASME HQ contacted Joe about this situation and said they would call UBS directly to emphasize the transfer needs to take place immediately.
11.District D Call-in
  • Ali called in for June. He reported that they are considering moving the call-in time to the third Wednesday rather than the third Tuesday. He said there is going to be another Section Leader training seminar on September 21st. Tony was nominated to attend, but wasn’t sure if he could make it. Tony agreed to be the call-in person for July.
12.Future City and First Lego
  • Both of these programs encourage students in grade school and middle school to consider careers in engineering, math, or science. First Lego is up and running locally and so it was agreed that we should focus our efforts there. Nathan is taking the lead on this.

2.BYU-Idaho
  1. Leadership is getting better organized as time goes on.
  2. Egg drop contest
  3. Rocket club. So far they have not been able to get a successful test of the rocket motor. In order to participate in the contest in Utah they need a successful motor test followed by a successful test launch. If they can’t successfully accomplish these tests in the next few weeks they will have to withdraw from the contest for this year.
3.Plant Tour
  1. 28 people came to ON Semiconductor.
  2. Something we could give the companies to show our appreciation for their time.
    1. The committee agreed that a letter and gift card to those who put on the tour would be appropriate.
4.ASME Early Career
  1. Next presentation will be in July – University of Wisconsin PhD student in thermal hydraulics
5.Fall BBQ/Social
  1. An opportunity to have High School students show up to meet college students that are involved in ASME. The college students would bring examples of their work to show off.
  2. September 19th at Tautphas Park Shelter 1.
  3. We need to advertise this better through the schools, particularly by collaborating with the math, physics, and engineering math teachers.
6.Pump Course
  1. 3-day course from Volk and Associates is a possibility. But it seems like a one day course might be a better option for us.
7.PE Exam course
  1. August to September
  2. 8-week course
  3. Need to find instructors
  4. Spring or Fall?
8.New ASME.org
  1. Looks more like Facebook

  2. Talk about it in the banquet

Minutes of the monthly ASME Idaho Section Meeting Held May 7th, 2013

Attendees:
Joe Palmer
Ali Siahpush
Tony Crawford
Michael Clark
Nate Carlson
Aaron Albrecht

Discussion Items:
1.Annual Banquet
  • The banquet will be held June 6th at 7pm at the Whitewater Grill. Ali accepted the assignment to arrange things with the Grill. It was decided that the program would primarily consist of student poster presentations of recent design projects or contests they’ve entered. Also we would like a rolling slide show of Section activities over the past year. Ali and Tony volunteered to put together the slide show. Scholarship winners will be recognized. We were going to present an Industry Partner award to Walker Engineering but he can’t make it that night and did not want to send a substitute.
2.BYU-Idaho Student Section
  • BYU-I held their opening social and signed up many new students. They held an egg drop contest. During the last month they were involved with RC Baja and SPDC. The Baja car had a strong drive system but wasn’t very fast. The rocket project continues with motor development being the main effort. Aaron asked if the Sr Section could support travel expenses for the rocket team to travel to Greenriver, UT in the summer. The committee agreed that this could be supported.
3.Plant Tour
  • Michael Clark reported that everything was set up for the May 15th plant tour of ON-Semiconductor in Pocatello.
4.Early Career Seminar
  • Ali reported that that about 18 people attended the last seminar which was a presentation by the BYU-I student rocket group. Ali suggested the next speaker could be a Nigerian student getting his PhD in reactor thermal hydraulics.
5.Form for Requesting Funds
  • The committee decided that it would be best to have a form for the students and others to use when they want to request funds. Tony took the assignment to create the form (and has since sent the form out).
6.PE Exam Preparation Course
  • Last month we discussed putting on a PE Exam Prep Course. Tony has CDs from a preparation course and it seemed like an 8 session series would be about right, probably held weekly. We thought that perhaps we could use local instructors and offer them some monetary compensation for their time. Ali volunteered to be one of the instructors. We thought maybe we could charge something like $250 per person with a breakdown of something like $100 for the instructor, $100 for the Section, $50 for renting the venue, and $50 for materials.
  • This would be a significant effort and we would need to get going on it fairly quickly. The instruction would need to take place in August and September to support a October test date.

  4. ISU is not attending SPDC but will do the Baja contest instead. ASME Sr Section agreed to fund the ISU student section at $250.
3.Budgets
  1. Because we have not held an ASME training course this year, our income is way down and consequently we are well into deficit spending for the year. However, we still retain a significant war chest from previous years’ earnings. For now we will continue to fund the activities we have traditionally funded in the past, but at a lower level.
  2. ASME National funding for LTC travel expenses, Ali to apply.

  2. They get their water from a reservoir but the gate valves in their supply lines keep freezing up.
  3. The Section agreed to try and remotely diagnose the seizing of the valves, and if that didn’t work perhaps we could reprise our fund raising efforts and send someone.
14.Professional Engineering Test Preparation as a Potential Fund Raiser and Service
  1. This would probably have a large audience
  2. The classes would probably be once a week for several weeks therefore we need a local instructor(s)

Discussion Items:
1.ISU
Cody Martin reported that the Student Leadership Seminar in Boise went very well. The attendance was down somewhat from previous years, but this was to be expected because of the travel from Washington to Boise. Five students from ISU attended. One of the activities was to make a small car from straws and popsicle sticks and compete with other student sections to see which design could carry the most Lifesavers.

Cody would like to have more tours for the ISU students next semester. Cody introduced Neil Burrows who will probably take over for Cody next year. Cody asked for support to help build the ISU Baja car. They need some funds to construct the car.
2.BYU-Idaho
Dustin introduced Monty Anderson, who will be taking over as the BYU-I student section chair in January. Dustin will continue to be involved at the District level. Monty reported that the first rocket launch will occur in January. Both BYU-I and ISU students indicated they would be interested in the January Johnson Brothers plant tour.
3.Plant Tour

  3. February 28th thru March 1st
  4. The committee agreed to send three representatives from our Section. ASME National pays the majority of the expenses for one person. The Idaho Section would pay the other expenses.
8.ASME Code Class
  1. Joe Palmer created a list of 15 different code subjects to consider.
  2. INL training budgets are less than in the past, but PE’s are now required to obtain 30 PDH hours every two years – this should help drive attendance up a little.
  3. The two leading contenders for course topics were: HVAC and Pump & Valve Selection. Joe said he would send an email to the Section asking for opinions as to which would be the best.
9.District D Phone in Report
  1. Waiting on the By-Laws to be reviewed.
  2. All ASME Section local bank accounts will be moved to a national custodial account. We will still maintain local control of our budgets, but the money will be in an ASME national account. This is expected to take place in the next few months.

Discussion Items:
1.ASME section spent more than made during the fiscal year just ended June 30th. However, during the prior several years the income exceeded outlay. We are not trying to generate a large reserve account and so last year’s deficit is fine.
2.Code Class – The main take-away for some attendees was that the codes are very confusing, and they will try to avoid using codes whenever they can. There was some discussion as to whether we should have an improved version of this class, but it wasn’t clear how exactly that could be accomplished. The following were some ideas:
  1. A general idea, what criteria to use ASME B31.3 (an example)
  2. Section III, Section VIII, B31.1, B31.3
  3. Walsh Engineering

  4. Tony Crawford – Vice Chair
  5. Alex Goodhue – Secretary
3.GD&T Training, ASME not to host the training.
4.Review of the Code Class:
  1. There was a large discussion about stamping drawings and who has the authority to stamp them. This discussion was brought about because the INL is under a Federal umbrella that allows for a unique way of stamping drawings. The ASME website has the response to the discussion.
  2. The handout from the class is also on the website.
  3. The city gentlemen were good, but not appropriate for the class. Would be good to use again, but for a different setting.
  4. ACTION ITEM: Thank you letters for those who presented – Steve Reese.
5.ASME Conferences
  1. The discussion was prompted because Ali had been working on a project for many years and wished to present it at the ASME Conference. It was going to be fairly expensive, the INL would not be covering his costs, and appealed to the ASME for funding. Joe suggested a couple of requirements and a set amount to support individuals going to the conference.
    1. Have to present at the conference. [This may be overly restrictive – it may be rare for a member to have a presentation accepted but no money from his or her employer.]Comment from Joe, need to discuss again.
    2. $1000 flat annual amount on a need basis (not an endowment fund)
6.Renew Membership with EIEC

Discussion Items:
1.Code Workshop: Karen has two main speakers lined up (Mark Pettit and Kurt Ririe). She is looking for additional speakers and is trying to line up a day for the 1 day workshop. The ISU location is about $75 to rent for the day since we are a non-profit organization. Tentative curriculum is when to use code and what code to use it in an INL perspective which is a little more conservative than in industry so it is still relevant to both audiences and we will instruct the speakers to make the distinction clear between the two. Price per person has been discussed to be $75/person and include the class and snacks. Karen is targeting May 11th, 2012. ACTION ITEM: Karen and Steve will be finalizing the speakers, date, and curriculum.
2.LTC summary: The three attendees said it went great. Some of the highlights included a workshop (Volt) on getting two non-obvious companies to work together such as a robot to simulate a rollercoaster. Another example was a battery company and the hybrid Prius. Other workshops included ethics (e.g. in Saudia Arabia it is disrespectful to show the bottom of your shoes and they sometimes hold hands during business, also business cards and their formal distribution are important in some cultures). They also went through when we need to notify headquarters if we put contracts in place. Other workshops included effective meetings, setting priorities, etc.
3.ISU student section update: Cody Martin gave an update on what the ISU section is doing. Some activities include getting ready for SPDC including the RC car and they have set up a tour of the INL robotics lab. ISU is also trying to get engaged with the BSU ASME student section and help revive them and try to get the SPDC in the future to be located in Boise. ACTION ITEM: Cody will be submitting a funding request for our section’s support.
4.Engaging BSU ASME section: ACTION ITEM: Nathan Carlson will be speaking with the Vice Chair at Boise to try and setup communication and offer assistance in getting their section going again and possibly get it setup to get them involved with our Code Workshop via distant learning. ACTION ITEM: Nathan McMasters will try to setup a face to face meeting with one of their contingents when he is over their the first of April.
5.BYUI representative: ACTION ITEM: Alex will follow up to see who their current representative is because they didn’t have one at this meeting.
6.Early Career Engineers: Karen said that she will contact Ben Baranko to talk about hand pumps for humanity and coordinate it with our District D leader (Judith Bamberge) visit.
7.Other ASME invitees: Ed suggested inviting our upcoming ASME President (Mark Goldsmith) to a meeting as the main speaker and perhaps coordinates his visit with another event that he could just be an attendee to see what our section is doing. ACTION ITEM: Nathan McMasters or Ed will offer an invitation to the incoming President to see when he might be able to come.
8.Don McEligot presentation: This event is tomorrow at 11:30 at the Whitewater grill.
9.Meeting time: We will be more concrete as being the first Tuesday of the month. Thus our next meeting will be April 3, 2012.
10.My Amazing Future: We supported the lunch for the event and will be taking credit for it as an activity we supported. There were about 70 junior high girls and 12 teachers that toured CAES and other applicable facilities to encourage them to see the importance of the sciences and math and to encourage them to sign up for related classes.
11.District D meeting: Joe will be attending this month’s webinar that occurs tonight.
12.ISU internship forum: Nathan spoke to Cody about the timing of such a forum and encouraged him to revisit it in the fall when there is enough time to generate applications.
13.Engineer’s Week: Ed went to the ASME event in Washington D.C. and gave an update on some of the events and the winners of the future city competition.
14.Student Scholarships: Ken said that the due date is April 15, 2012.
15.ASME online course: Nathan will email the link to the course.
16.Section officer change: Steve said that we should start thinking about getting new officers as the ones in office have been in term about 1 year.

Discussion Items:
1.Eagle Eye Produce Tour: Joe said that it went well and we had about 30 people attend and they signed a non-disclosure agreement. There was a PDH roster that we had the attendees sign, include their email, and could send a scanned copy back to the attendees for their records.
2.Early Career Engineers: Ali said that there were about 17 people that attended. The topic was pebble bed reactor technology. The layout was to have the lecture first then order near the end of the presentation then to eat and mingle afterwards and it seemed to work out well. The next meeting will be in April. The district leader (Judith Bamberger) said that she would like to attend our next early career engineers forum and would like to talk about some of the stuff associated with the district and see what our section is doing.
3.North American Young Generation in Nuclear: Shannon gave a synopsis of their organization and some of the presentations they are going to be giving in the near future. She also mentioned that she was looking for a program chair. If anybody is interested in the program chair position, they can contact Shannon.
4.BYUI status: Stuart said that their upcoming activities are the design and performance of a hovercraft, design of a belt buckle, and participating in Grand Targhee’s box derby at the end of their ski season.
5.LTC 2012: Nathan verified that everything is in order for the three members that will be attending.
6.District D meeting: Karen attended the meeting in February and the main things she took away were that they want to give a technical conference with local experts speaking at a convenient location for the district.
7.Hand Pumps for Haiti trip: Nathan asked if our sponsored person had submitted their receipts and since he hadn’t Karen will follow up and will also follow up with regard to a follow on presentation.
8.Internship forums: The information has been sent to the ISU section to contact Erin Hansen at INL to give one of these events but David said that it was probably too late to do this year but the fall is actually the more opportune time to give one.
9.Code Course (when and which codes to use): Karen did some research and INL agrees that there is a need but their organization transition and the associated budgetary circumstances is limiting the finalization of such a course. Therefore we are postponing the target date until May.
10.PE course: Ali looked into it and ISU and UofI aren’t currently offering it but said if there is enough interest then they may offer it. Karen suggested that we survey the INL and see if there is any interest and to figure out the logistics if enough interest is identified.
11.Engineer’s week: Ed shared that Battelle and ASME are the national sponsors and there will be activities including future city and awards for teachers that integrate the sciences into their curriculum.
12.Don McEligot presentation: March 14th presentation on the matched index of refraction device where Joe said that he is making the plans for it and was thinking that he would like to organize it to look like the early career engineering luncheon.
13.The My Amazing Future Organization: Karen gave a pitch on supporting this event supported by Idaho Women in Nuclear (72 young women to tour the INL facilities). The Executive Committee voted to support the effort in a monetary amount of $500.
14.Scholarships: Ken mentioned he is working on the scholarship program where the applications will be due in April.
15.EIEC engineering week banquet: The Executive Committee voted to support this event in the amount of $100.
16.ASME online course: ASME is offering a free course on ASME related topics which Nathan is going to forward on to the group.

Discussion Items:
1.Introductions: ISU student section representative Cody Martin came and gave a synopsis of their activities and their desire to be involved in our section. Ali suggested getting Dr. Williams involved with their section as a lead and helping with their activities.
2.Early Career Luncheon: Ali talked to a Ph.D. candidate (Maziar Rostamian) at UofI to do a talk on Wednesday January 21, 2012. Ali suggested for a layout to have him talk for 30 minutes and then lunch and then finish his speech. It turns out to be cost effective to do these events quarterly. The topic is going to be the simulation of pebble bed reactor research. Ali also mentioned that UofI would like to be more involved and we discussed that they could attend for a lower donation amount of $5 and we would pay for the rest of their lunch.
3.LTC: Alex, Richard Skifton, and Nathan Carlson have registered and Nathan has his travel arranged and the others will be doing so as well in the near future.
4.Hand Pumps for Haiti: Our sponsored person has gone down and we will try to coordinate for a presentation of his experience including the saving of a washed out truck and the components that he identified to help with the effort.
5.Internship forum: We gave the ISU rep. an idea that this was out there and they were interested: ACTION ITEM: Tony will contact David Duncan to see how it is going and details to maybe get one arranged for ISU.
6.BYUI senior design competition: Nathan Carlson, Richard Skifton, and Alex Goodhue gave an update on the event and a synopsis of the projects.
7.District meeting: Alex said it went well and Karen said that she will be attending the district D meeting in February in San Jose. SPDC will be in Central Washington (Elingsburg, WA) in April and it appears that the BYUI and ISU sections will be attending.
8.iNEER Leadership Award: Joe Palmer gave an update that he contacted Don McEligot and got an idea what he would be speaking about related to entropy generation and manipulation. Emphasis was given that it would be for a larger audience not just the early career engineers. It was brought up that you can get PDHs for this event and the method we will use to allow the attendees to record their PDHs for this event would be to put out an attendance roster with name and email and then scan and send it to the attendees after they attend for their records.
9.Eagle Eye Produce: This has been organized for January 25th at 7:00 and Joe will make an advertisement for I-Notes.
10.Code Course: Karen narrowed down a path to get speakers which includes talking to Gary Tarbet and Pettit to get direction. ACTION ITEM: Karen will follow up as well as Ali. Target date for the event is in April or May.
11.EIEC Christmas social: Karen said that there were about 40 people and no speaker and it went well.
12.Discovery Teachers Award: Ed Harvego said that there were 187 nominations and there were a few categories with the announcement of the winners coming out the first of January. Our nominee was Ann Seeford. Ed will be attending related proceedings in February. Karen said that there were others in the district that would be interested in helping if they did another innovations workshop like we participate in in October.
13.Activity report update: Alex said that the latest one was for the December meeting, hand pumps for humanity, and the BYUI senior design competition judging.
14.P.E. class: We are looking to set up one for the future and seeing if UofI is offering a version of this class as they did previously so we don’t duplicate the effort.
15.Next meeting: Scheduled for February 7, 2012.

By the end we decided that all three (Alex, Richard, and Nathan) would be going.
3.Hand Pumps for Humanity: Joe Palmer said that about 25 attended so we were pleased with the attendance and got enough donations to cover the food. We are still waiting to receive funds from the brown paper ticket donations. Joe mentioned that the Diversified tour after the hand pumps for humanity was nice. He particularly mentioned the gloveboxes that they were working on.
4.Internship forum: David Duncan was going to give an internship forum to BYUI but was not at this meeting so we did not get an update.

6.Plant Tour. Michael Clark is the contact for the proposed plant tour to Miskin Scaper works. He has been in contact with them and they are expected to provide him a date in the next few days. Michael is also a liaison with Eastern Idaho Technical College (EITC) and helps them identify vocational programs that would be helpful to local companies.
7.Code Class. Nathan asked the group for ideas for our Section's next training class. The group decided that rather than put on another ASME national training class, we would rather organize a class that teaches which ASME code to use in which situation. The trainers would be local code experts. Karen accepted the assignment to discuss this with Cheryl O'Brien, an engineering manager at INL.
8.Hand Pumps for Haiti. Earlier this year our Section helped send Mark Slovak to Haiti to help the locals learn to repair their water pumps. Karen proposed that we continue supporting this effort. Approximately $200 is needed to buy spare parts for the pumps. Additionally, the travel expenses are around $4000. Karen would like us to help organize a fundraiser to gather donations from the community and to this end she proposed a dinner meeting. Karen will set up a separate planning meeting to organize the fund raiser(s).

Minutes of the monthly ASME Idaho Section Meeting Held August 2, 2011

Attendees:
Anthony Crawford
Karen Moore

5.Nathan will be attending the next District D tele-conference meeting to help familiarize himself with the current District D meeting.
6.There will be an innovation workshop for district 93 teacher’s professional development day in October for which ASME will be supporting. Because of Ken’s training he will be able to direct the other ASME members in performing this activity. There is also a push for all sections in the district to give this training. The current hurdles are the other section’s perception on the difficulty to put on such activities. It was discussed that we should further discuss and make arrangements at next month’s meeting.
7.Karen gave an update on the women in nuclear regional meeting (35 people from nuclear power industry). Topics presented were along the lines of internal education and professional progression within the INL. This issue segwayed into the INL’s resume workshops for the interns and other related type of activities. There was discussion on whether we would like to do a resume and interview workshop in conjunction with ANS for potential audiences including ISU’s college of engineering students. A potential contact to assist this would be ISU professor Mary Lou Gougar who is also very well tied with ANS.
8.Nathan brought up an email he received regarding the ASME nomination system where there is a push to help make the nomination panel selection more formal in an attempt to gain more diversity.
9.Nathan mentioned that he received another email regarding the EIEC whose secretary (Diana Grauer) is an ASME member and in their email she said that she would be interested in talking with our section and hopefully act as our EIEC liason. Nathan will be contacting Diana and potentially inviting her to the next early career forum as a more formal ASME interest meeting venue.
10.The subject of putting on a class was brought up and last year we put on two courses. This was different than our normal one event a year in the spring at university place during spring break. Karen discussed that our new strategy is rather than one large course doing two smaller courses where our acceptance criteria for success margin is smaller (~15 people) but more acceptable. Ones we have done in the past include welding, ASME section VIII division I, ASME section XI, ASME section III, Geometric dimensioning and toleranceing, ASME section B31.3 or B31.1, etc. Some suggestions for courses include finite element analysis, nonlinear analysis.
11.It was mentioned that Mike Clark from last meeting mentioned he may be scheduling a tour with Miskin scraper equipment fabrication. Joe will be following up on status.
12.Karen also posed the action to Nathan to find someone at AREVA to get involved with the ASME section.
13.Joe will be following up on whether our financial support of the children with disabilities playground had been received.

Discussion Items:
1.Scholarships. Ken reported on the scholarship applications. Only three applications were received on time and completely filled out. These three applicants consisted of a high school student, and undergraduate, and a graduate student. All three students appeared to be of high caliber and had demonstrable need of the scholarship funds. The committee agreed to provide a $1000 scholarship for all three applicants.
2.BYU-I Activities.
  • The BYU-I Student Section travelled to the Student Professional Development Conference (SPDC) at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, WA. There were seven attendees and they entered all of the competitions. Brian Oswald won an award for best web site design.
  • John Payne and David Reynolds are the co-chairs for the BYU-I student section this year. Their main goals are to increase membership and sponsor more student competitions such as the glider and pool wars conducted last year. They are hoping to include a rocketry competition this year.
3.ASME District D. Tony Crawford was our call-in person for the telecom in April. He described our recent activities. The next District D telecom is Tuesday, May 10th and Ali agreed to be the call-in person.
4.Early Career Development. The next early career engineer lunch seminar will be held May 19th and the presenter will be Akira Tokuhiro, a University of Idaho professor. He will discuss the accidents that occurred at the Fukushima Dai-ichi reactor complex and the lessons learned. Check the Section web site for more details.
5.Training Course. The Practical Welding course was held April 26 – 28 at the Idaho Innovation Center. Tony attended the course and spoke very highly of it. The demonstration by Diversified Metals added to the course. There were fourteen attendees which is four more than break-even and so the Section made a nice profit.
6.Habitat for Humanity Build Day. Last month there was some interest expressed for our Section to participate in a build day for the current Habitat house being built. It appears that Saturday, June 4th will be the best day and participation is limited to about 10 people. Please RSVP to Joe Palmer (joe.palmer@inl.gov) by June 1st if you would like to participate. All participants must take the Habitat on-line safety training prior to their work day – go to this site http://www.idahofallshabitat.org/get_involved.html and follow the instructions under “Volunteer Safety Course”.

Discussion Items:
1.New Attendees. Kurt Hamman, Craig Biebel, and Brett Stone attended for the first time. Kurt and Craig are mechanical engineers at INL and wanted to learn more about the activities of the Section. Brett Stone is a member of the BYU-I Student Section and is the editor of their newsletter.
2.BYU-I Activities.
  • The BYU-I Student Section will be traveling next week to the Student Professional Development Conference (SPDC) at Eastern Washington University. Our Section has paid for their travel expenses for the last few years (usually about $500) and this expense was approved by the committee.
  • The Student Section has sponsored a glider competition in the past and they are considering inviting high school students to watch the competition or perhaps helping high schools conduct their own glider competitions.
  • A couple months ago the Student Section sponsored a small on-campus contest where students incorporated items purchased from a thrift store into crafts that could cross a swimming pool. Brian had spliced together some videos from this competition to create a 1 minute video that he showed to those attending. It was very entertaining and we’re going to get it posted to our website. Give us two or three days and then check: http://sections.asme.org/Idaho/news.html.
3.ASME District D. Judith Bamberger was elected as the new District D Leader. Steve will probably travel to the next District D meeting (in late May) to meet her and otherwise represent our Section. The next District D telecom is Tuesday, April 12th. Tony Crawford agreed to be the call-in person.
4.Early Career Development. An early career engineer lunch seminar was held March 24th. and Nate Carlson was the presenter. About 26 people were in attendance, many of whom were attending an Idaho Section function for the first time. Joe accepted the assignment to send a thank you letter to Nate’s manager. Steve suggested that perhaps these seminars should be held bi-monthly or quarterly rather than monthly. This is something to be discussed with Nathan McMasters.
5.Training Course. The Practical Welding course is scheduled for April 26 – 28 at the Idaho Innovation Center. Currently there are 11 people registered and this is enough to make the course profitable. Assignments for picking up refreshments at Fred Meyer and delivering to the Innovation Center were as follows:
  • Tuesday- Steve for nametags and Ali for refreshments
  • Wednesday – Karen
  • Thursday – Tony
The Innovation Center takes care of cleanup.
6.Haiti Hand Pumps. Mark Slovak is currently in Haiti trouble shooting the hand pumps and providing training for maintaining them. Our Section is paying for about half of his travel expenses (see last month’s minutes).
7.Habitat for Humanity Tool Donation and Build Day. Approximately $1000 worth of tools were purchased and delivered to Habitat for Humanity. They sent a letter of appreciation and invited us to join with them on one of their build days for their latest home which broke ground March 30th. Build days are usually every Saturday and Joe accepted the assignment to identify a build day in May and get the word out to the Section.
8.Scholarships. Ken reported that he has several applications and is reviewing them.
9.Annual Banquet. The Idaho Section usually sponsors an awards banquet once a year. We agreed that it would be held in the month of June. A possible location is the Eagle Rock Art gallery and Karen agreed to check into the cost of this facility and other details. Karen recommended asking Mark Slovak to report on his work in Haiti and this suggestion was endorsed by the committee.
10.New Officers. Nathan McMasters has been serving as the vice-chair and so he will take over as chair beginning July 1st. Joe Palmer was nominated to take over as vice-chair. This will leave the position of Secretary open and volunteers/nominations for this position are encouraged. James Angell has been serving for some time as the Treasurer and may want a break – we will get his input on whether he wants to be replaced. We also need a new Program Director. Tony Crawford agreed to head up a task of distributing old ME magazines to schools and other appropriate locations. It was proposed that the officers serve for two years and we will revisit this topic next month.

Discussion Items:
1.ASME District D Leader. Steve had distributed nomination packages for two nominees prior to the meeting. Those present voted for Judith Bamberger and Steve will submit our Section’s two votes for her.
2.Early Career Development. The next early career engineer lunch seminar will be held March 24th. Karen took the action to ask Nate Carlson to be the presenter. The suggested presenter for April is Piyush Sabharwall, who is designing heat exchangers for next generation reactors. There had been some discussion of providing a tour of HFEF at MFC, however this is a pretty big time commitment and so we decided to bring up the possibility of the HFEF tour at the March 24th meeting to gauge interest.
3.Tours Held. Two tours were conducted for BYU-I students in February. Dave hosted a tour to HFEF on Feb 24th with Adam Robinson as the tour guide – about 12 students attended. Diversified Technologies also hosted a tour of their facilities for four BYU-I students.
4.Code Course. The Practical Welding course has been scheduled for April 26 – 28 at the Idaho Innovation Center. Steve will advertise the course through the Section mailing list and INL iNotes. Nathan and others will advertise through their personal contacts outside INL.
5.Rural Educational Outreach. Premier Technologies has sponsored a high school career day in Salmon the last couple of years and our Section has supported contests between the high schools. As far as we can tell this event will not take place in 2011.
6.Leadership Training Conference. Joe reported on his attendance at the conference. Two takeaways were: a) Consider providing old Mechanical Engineering magazines to local High Schools, particularly to teachers who are teaching engineering preparation classes; b) In the advertisement for a technical lecture or plant tour, state that the event is worth so many PDH hours and provide a certificate at the end of the event stating that the person attended. On a related note, there is a web site which allows PEs to keep track of their PDH hours free. The link is: http://www.pdhonline.org. Note that keeping track of PDH via spreadsheet works about as well as this site.
7.Habitat for Humanity Tool Donation. We are ready to purchase the concrete finishing tools. For the power tools we are waiting for a response from Harbor Freight to see if they will match part of our donation by offering a significant discount.
8.Plant Tours. Our Section intends to conduct several plant tours this year. Two businesses that might interesting are: Spudnick Equipment Co. in Blackfoot, and Miskin Scraper Works in Ucon. Suggestions of other businesses are welcome.
9.BYU-I Activities. The BYU-I Student Section sponsored a small on-campus contest where students incorporated items purchased from a thrift store into crafts that could cross a swimming pool. The contest was a success and five teams participated.
10.Haiti Hand Pumps. Our Section has been informally collaborating with Engineers Without Borders (EWB) regarding a couple broken hand pumps in rural Haiti. We’ve had a difficult time diagnosing the problems from Idaho. Mark Slovak has agreed to accompany EWB to Haiti to help repair the pumps and train the locals. Those present agreed that our Section would defray $1500 of his travel expenses for this effort (this will amount to about half of his expenses).

Discussion Items:
1.Tour of the CAES CAVE. This tour was held as scheduled on Wednesday, Jan 19th and about 14 people took the tour. Everyone was impressed and Cheryl O’Brien said she is going to recommend that the simpler version of the system at CAES be installed at each of the major INL facilities.
2.Early Career Development. We held the first early career luncheon seminar at the Hard Hat Grill on Jan 27th. Adam Robinson was the presenter and discussed the challenges of installing equipment in hot cells. About 15 early career engineers attended. Karen took the attendees list and organized a tour of HFEF in February. HFEF is a fuel examination facility at the Materials and Fuels Complex. Nathan said he is planning a tour of the Diversified shop on March 17th. These two activities will constitute the early career meetings for February and March.
3.Code Course. Our Section usually sponsors an ASME code course each year. For Spring 2011 the committee agreed that the Practical Welding course would be offered. This will probably occur in April depending on availability of instructors. Nathan proposed that in conjunction with the course, Diversified would provide a short welding demonstration each day of the course.
4.Leadership Training Conference. Originally both Ali and Joe were slated to attend this course. Ali can no longer make it and so Nathan said he would see if one of his early career engineers would be interested in going. Steve agreed with the proposal on the condition that the attendee is interested in becoming active in the Section.
5.Habitat for Humanity Tool Donation. Joe and Dave have priced the tools and it looks like given a $1000 budget, we will be able to buy all of the concrete finishing tools and about half of the other tools on the list provided by Habitat. Dave is going to contact the appropriate persons at American Construction Supply and Harbor Freight to see if they would be interested in matching part of our donation – and this would allow us to furnish more tools.
6.E-Week. The E-Week banquet is Feb 24th, 7pm at the Shilo Inn. All members of our section are invited to attend. Last year the cost was $28 per person ($14 for students). Steve said that the EIEC had asked for $100 to support E-Week. This is the amount we’ve previously contributed and those present agreed it would be acceptable to donate this amount again.
7.BYU-I Activities. Note: Brian Oswald is the new BYU-I student section chair, taking over from Scott Smith.

a) Diversified Tour. Nathan has scheduled a tour of the Diversified facilities for the BYU-I Student Section on Feb 3rd at 2pm.
b) HFEF Tour. Dave is organizing a tour of HFEF for the BYU-I Student Section. Then tentative date is Feb 24th, probably around 1 – 3pm.
c) BYU-I mechanical engineering students will be attending the Student Professional Development Conference (SPDC) again this year and participating in the competitions. Our Section agreed to pay for travel costs which in the past have amounted to a few hundred dollars.
d) The BYU-I Student Section is sponsoring a small on-campus contest where students incorporate items purchased from a thrift store into a craft that can cross a swimming pool. We agreed to fund refreshments for this contest in the amount of approx $30.

1.Tour of the CAES CAVE. Ed Harvago has arranged a tour for ASME members on Wednesday, 1/19 at noon and Steve has sent an email to the membership with the details.
2.Last month we discussed briefly the need for a new representative from AREVA. Nathan has a couple contacts with AREVA and will see if anyone is interested.
3.Early Career Development. We are going to sponsor a lunch-time seminar series at various eateries around town. Plans are in place to hold the first seminar at the Hard Hat Grill on Jan 27, 2011 at 11:30am. Adam Robinson will present the first seminar and will discuss the challenges of instrumentation in a hot cell. Our section will pay the lunch tab for this first seminar. Steve and Nathan will advertise the seminar via a flyer sent by email and on INL’s I-Notes.
4.Code Course. Our Section usually sponsors an ASME code course each year. For 2011 we discussed several possible courses including: Pumps and Valves, Practical Welding, and Introduction to FEA. The tentative time frame is April or May.
5.District D Telecon. The telecon for this month is 1/11. Nathan agreed to call in.
6.Habitat for Humanity Tool Donation. Joe contacted Habitat for Humanity and they provided a list of needed tools. Their highest priority items are concrete finishing tools, circular saws, a finish nailer, and miter saw. Those present agreed that we would buy up to $1000 worth of tools from this list and furnish to Habitat for Humanity. Joe will purchase the tools and permanently mark them as being donated by the Idaho Section of ASME. We also discussed arranging a time for volunteers from our Section to work together on one of the Habitat home projects.
7.Hand Pumps for Haiti. Karen is organizing a group of engineers to help solve problems with water well hand pumps in Haiti. Our Section will help research the problems with current pumps and may provide funds for one or more new pumps (or new parts for existing pumps).
8.E-Week Banquet. The E-Week banquet is Feb 24th, 7pm at the Shilo Inn. All members of our section are invited to attend. Last year the cost was $28 per person ($14 for students). However, our Section will pay for one representative and guest. Please contact Steve if you are interested in being the representative.
9.BYU-I Activities. The BYU-I student section has requested tours of both an INL facility and Diversified Metals. They would also like at least one lecture on the BYU-I campus this semester.

Minutes of the monthly ASME Idaho Section Meeting Held December 7, 2010

Attendees:
Steve Reese
Karen Moore
Joe Palmer
Ed Harvego
Ali Siahpush
Nathan McMasters
Scott Smith

Discussion Items:
1.Monthly Section Meeting. Steve raised the question via email during the month as to whether we should consider having these section meetings during the lunch hour rather than early in the morning. He didn’t get a lot of strong responses one way or the other, but the general tenor was that the early morning breakfast time is the best. Part of the reasoning is that the noise level during the lunch hour at almost any restaurant would be too high to hold an effective discussion.
2.Fred Yapuncich has accepted a new job in the Tri Cities area. Fred has been very active in the Section for some time and we are definitely going to feel his loss. He has not only been our major contact with Areva, he was also our representative on the Easter Idaho Engineering Council (EIEC). Nathan has some Areva contacts and agreed to ask around and see if one of them would be willing to attend our monthly section meetings. A new representative to the EIEC is also needed.
3.Early Career Development. We are going to sponsor a lunch-time seminar series at various eateries around town. Plans were laid to hold the first seminar at the Hard Hat Grill on Jan 27, 2011 at 12 noon. Our section will pay the entire lunch tab for this first seminar and then we’ll decide whether the attendees will be asked to pay for part of the cost in the future. Nathan agreed to make the arrangements with the Hard Hat Grill and Karen will ask Adam Robinson of the HFEF facility at MFC if he will be the first speaker. Nathan also agreed to prepare advertising (probably by email).
4.Sharing Tax ID with EIEC. EIEC would like us to give them our tax ID to help them demonstrate their non-profit status. Those present agreed that it would be acceptable to let them use our tax ID number in this manner (only).
5.Professional Development Day (PDD). Final accounting for the PDD was done. The event broke even with a small profit ($460), and final settlement and bill paying is in process between PMI and ASME.
6.ASME Leadership Training Conference (LTC). Each year ASME National sponsors a leadership training conference. In 2011 it will be held March 3 – 6 in the Hyatt Regency at the Dallas Ft-Worth airport. Ali and Joe expressed interest in attending the conference and Steve said he would submit their names. There may be a time slot during the conference where section representatives display posters illustrating recent section activities. Ali and Joe need to find out whether they should get a poster put together.
7.Tour of the CAES CAVE. Ed will arrange a tour for ASME members on Wednesday, 1/19. The tour will be limited to 20 people. If sufficient interest is expressed by the membership, a second tour can be scheduled.
8.District D Teleconference. Our ASME section is in District D and each month they have been holding a teleconference. Karen participated last month, but we need to spread this opportunity around to other section members. Ali agreed to call in this month (on 12/14).
9.Use of Accumulated Section Funds. The section has accumulated about $20K that could be used for worthy purposes in the community. Previous discussions have been along the line of using this money for a “grand gesture”. Further consideration leads us to believe that it is unlikely we could do anything “grand” for $20K and the money would be better spent on a number of smaller projects which would promote ASME and benefit the community. The committee felt that the primary use of these funds should be to support education, specifically things that would encourage students to pursue engineering or related careers. First Lego and First Robotics are two likely programs that could benefit. Joe mentioned the possibility donating tools to Habitat for Humanity to make house construction more efficient. The idea being the tools would provide a long term benefit to that charity. Joe agreed to check into whether tools would be something useful to H for H.
10.Scott Smith, BYU-I student section chair, agreed to contact the student section at ISU and make sure they are aware of the opportunities available at the spring student conference.

Discussion Items:
1.BYU-I Trailer Design Contest. The contest was held on October 29th with Ali Siahpush, David Duncan, and Piyush Sabharwall serving as judges. There were three teams, all with good ideas and presentations. A $100 cash prize was awarded to the winning team.
2.Demonstrate Trebuchet at Telford School. On October 22nd Nathan McMasters, Steve Reese, and Joe Palmer provided 10 minute presentations explaining the history and science behind trebuchets to three classes. A team of BYU-I students then demonstrated the ASME/Diversified trebuchet for the Telford students who took measurements of the distances the pumpkins flew.

Thanks, once again, go to Nathan and Diversified Metal Products for transporting the trebuchet.
3.Early Career Development. The primary goal of this effort is to get young engineers more involved in ASME and we decided last month that one way to accomplish this would be to hold a lunch-time seminar series at various eateries around town (with our Section footing the tab to encourage participation). Fred suggested that the Hard Hat Grill would be a good place to hold the first seminar and Karen suggested Nate Carlson could present his work on the sodium separation project. The details of planning this event will be decided at next month's meeting.
4.ISU Pumpkin Chucking Contest. On October 30th the BYU-I students entered their trebuchet in the annual ISU pumpkin chucking contest – and won the contest – congratulations to them.
5.Professional Development Day (PDD). Karen reported that they had a good turnout for PDD with 50 people registered. The PDD is held about every six months and our Section provides some monetary support.
6.BYU-I Seminar Series. On October 28th, Dale Wahlquist, INL engineering manager, discussed the type of projects mechanical engineers take on at INL. There was also a representative from the BEA Human Resources department who explained the INL intern program and hiring practices. This meeting was on the BYU-I campus and about 20 students attended.
7.Higher Interest Rate for Section Funds. James Angell checked into whether we could get a better interest rate on our funds through a CD versus money market. For a 12 month CD the difference in interest rate was only 0.65% and Steve thought this was not enough to justify locking up the money. The others present generally agreed.
8.Tour of the CAES CAVE. This tour was held on 10/7 and went very well with about 22 BYU-I students and three Diversified Metals employees there. Ed suggested that this would be a good tour for our Section and he agreed to check into available times.
9.Electric Vehicle Technology Presentation. On Monday 11/15 at 6:15 pm Jim Francfort of INL will discuss his work with electric vehicles. The Treasure Valley (Boise) section of ASME will be joining us for this presentation via the University of Idaho's compressed video system. The presentation will be at the Tingey Administration bldg., Room 350A, University Place, 1776 Science Center Drive, Idaho Falls. Pizza and drinks will be provided. Joe agreed to bring the pizza and drinks.
10.Future Tour Possibilities. We briefly discussed future tour possibilities for our Section. The Budweiser plant and potato processing plants are good possibilities.

Richard Anderson

Discussion Items:
1.BYU-I Trailer Design Contest. Our Section has agreed to provide three judges and to award the winner a $100 cash prize. The judging will take place Friday October 29th at 4pm in the Austin Building Rm 105. Ali Siahpush and Dave Duncan agreed to be two of the judges with a third judge still to be identified.

Action: James Angell to please send a $100 check to Greg Roach at BYU-I for the prize money. Steve has Greg's address.
2.Demonstrate Trebuchet at Telford School. We have agreed to demonstrate the BYU-I trebuchet at Telford school on October 22nd. We will also provide 5 – 10 minute presentations to three classes just before the demonstration. Joe, Nathan, and Steve agreed provide the presentations. Karen will provide a PowerPoint presentation to use. Nathan will help BYU-I transport the trebuchet and BYU-I will provide 3-4 students to operate the trebuchet.
3.First Robotics. Richard Anderson attended the meeting and discussed a program called First Robotics, which is designed to get kids interested in science and engineering. School sponsored teams design robots which then compete against the robots of other teams to perform defined tasks. When a school agrees to host a team they receive several copies of AutoCAD, LABVIEW, and other professional software to help the teams design their robots. The students greatly enjoy the competitions. In this area only Hillcrest and Bonneville High Schools are participating. There are at least two areas where our Section can help: funds to help get one or more teams started, and by providing mechanical engineers to serve as mentors and advisors. Ali is the point of contact for this. During the next ASME District D telecon Karen will mention First Robotics.
4.Early Career Development. The primary goal of this effort is to get young engineers more involved in ASME. Nathan has talked to several young engineers about what would most interest them and they said learning what other early career engineers are doing. It was proposed that we could have a monthly seminar (lunch meeting) which would be held at various restaurants around town. Young engineers would present their work (PowerPoint or otherwise) during the lunch. Our Section would organize and foot the lunch bill as an attendance incentive. We agreed late November as being a good goal for the first seminar and that next month we would plan the first few seminars. Karen suggested Nate Carlson could present his work on the sodium separation project.
5.ISU Pumpkin Chucking Contest. The annual ISU pumpkin chucking contest will be held Oct 30th. The BYU-I students said they would like to enter their trebuchet in the contest.
6.High School Career Day in Salmon. Karen, Joe, and several BYU-I student members attended the annual rural high school career day that was held in Salmon on September 22nd. This event included a demonstration of the BYU-I trebuchet and a contest between three high schools to see which could most accurately launch softballs at a target using the catapult built by their school-sponsored team. The competition was fast paced and enjoyable. All three teams got a lot out of it (Salmon High School won).
7.BYU-I Seminar Series. On October 28th, Dale Wahlquist, an INL engineering manager, will discuss the opportunities in mechanical engineering at the INL and explain the INL intern program. This meeting will be held in the Austin Building Rm 105 on the BYU-I campus.
8.EIEC Christmas Party. The Eastern Idaho Engineering Council would like a $100 donation for their annual Christmas party. Steve said he didn’t have a problem with this, but at the same time he’s not sure anyone from ASME has attended the last couple of years.
9.Tour of the CAE’s CAVE. This tour has been scheduled for 10/7 at 3:30pm. It has a 25 person maximum. About 21 BYU-I students plan on attending and Nathan was going to bring three or four young engineers as well.
10."Ride the Divide". Steve said there is a documentary mountain biking movie called “Ride the Divide” which is available for charitable screening. The cost of renting the movie is $295 and all proceeds go to charity. Steve thought it would best be shown on the wall at the Idaho Brewing Company, but unfortunately the season is past for outdoor showings. He will look into this further.

Discussion Items:
1.Two attendees from the ISU ASME student section were welcomed: Abe Ortiz and Jerry Safi. We have wanted to get the ISU student section more involved and this is a good start.
2.The Section sponsored Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Course was held August 23 – 26 at the Idaho Innovation Center. Steve reported that this venue served the purpose well although they ended up borrowing a projector from INL. The course was profitable and made about $7K.
3.BYU-I Trailer Design Contest. Our Section will provide the judges and judging will take place about the end of October.
4.Donation to Telford School. We donated money to help them by software and other equipment needed to conduct Jeopardy type question and answer contests. They were very appreciative of our donation and have the equipment up and running.
5.Merit Funding. Steve reported that we scored 98/100 on our merit funding report. He reviewed the major activities we had in fiscal year 2010 (July 2009 - June 2010) which are listed below.

6.Early Career Development. Nate has agreed to head this up and he will provide some ideas and a proposed date for the activity during our next meeting.
7.Trebuchet Demonstration. The trebuchet (with the recent modifications installed by the BYU-I student section) will be demonstrated in Salmon on Sept 22nd. Nate agreed to provide a truck to pull the trebuchet trailer to Salmon. The student section will bring some other interesting items, such as a bicycle driven generator, to demonstrate engineering principles.
8.Tour of the CAE’s CAVE. The BYU-I student section would like to see the CAVE in action (a 3D virtual reality demonstration). Karen agreed to find the correct contact for them.
9.ISU Faculty Representative. Ali suggested that Abe and Jerry contact Dr. Brian Williams at ISU and see if he would be willing to serve as the faculty representative.
10.Professional Development Day. Another professional development day will be held Friday, October 29. Karen is the contact on this.
11.E-week. ASME is the sponsor for national E-week in 2012. Ed and Karen are on the planning committee for this. They are hopeful that they will be able to announce the corporate sponsor later this month.

Minutes of the monthly ASME Idaho Section Meeting Held August 10, 2010

Attendees:
Steve Reese
Karen Moore
Dave Duncan
Fred Yapuncich
Joe Palmer
James Angell
Brian Oswald

Discussion Items:
1.Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Course – August 23 - 26. Steve reported that 11 attendees are enrolled, which will allow the Section to make a modest profit. Coffee will be provided by the Idaho Innovation Center (where the course is being held). We will provide snacks each morning. Steve will order the snacks from Fred Meyer ahead of time and Section members will pick them up and deliver them to the Innovation Center per the following schedule:

8/23 Monday – Fred Yapuncich
8/24 Tuesday – Steve Reese
8/25 Wednesday – Karen Moore
8/26 Thursday – Dave Duncan

Pickup snacks between 7 and 8 am.
2.BYU-I Trailer Design Contest. It looks like this contest will be held the beginning of the fall semester for BYU-I. The trailer will not be built for this year’s trebuchet competition. Our Section will provide judges and a $100 award to the winning team. The judging will take place mid to late October.
3.BYU-I Miscellaneous. Dave is working with the BYU-I student section to set up a monthly forum. The first forum was set tentatively for September 30th.

The BYU-I student section will try to increase membership during new student orientation. We offered to furnish them a banner for this effort. Fred is in charge of getting the banner made.

The BYU-I student section would like to organize some tours during the year. Some ideas were: the ISU accelerator, Palisades Dam, Diversified Metal, and the CAES CAVE.
4.Donation to Telford School. We’ve previously discussed donating $500 to Telford School to help them buy some software to enable them to conduct question and answer contests. Telford was able to get a $1000 grant and $750 is required to complete the software purchase. The group agreed donating the $750 balance would be appropriate.
5.Karen reported that INL would like to donate some amount to cover Section members’ travel expenses to Salmon for the Trebuchet contest this fall.
6.James has nearly completed the financial report for the past fiscal year, July 2009 - June 2010. Steve is just about done with our report to ASME to qualify for merit funding.
7.Because of the success of the code courses held over the last few years our Section has a substantial balance of funds. The group discussed some possible uses of this money as listed below:

Increase the value or number of scholarships awarded each year

Fund a multi-university collaboration (contest?) of some kind

Pay for Section members to attend conferences. This may be contingent on a paper being presented.

Subsidize the cost of ASME membership for early career engineers

Commission a physical functional item that would benefit the community

Fund a program for early career engineers (Nate McMasters to propose something along this line)

Related to this general topic (use of Section funds) Steve asked James to determine whether there is any financial vehicle for getting more interest on our money.
8.We briefly discussed trends in our Section membership over the past few years. We only have data for the last two years and over that period the membership has been about 200 and trended up slightly, about 3%.

Discussion Items:
1.Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Course. Steve reported that everything is arranged for holding the class Aug 23 - Aug 26 in the Idaho Innovation Center. An announcement should come out in iNotes today. We have two weeks to get at least 11 students signed up. Steve will send the information to Fred, Nathan, and Brian so that they can advertise it at Areva, Diversified, and Premier Technologies, respectively.
2.BYU-I Trailer Design Contest. It looks like this contest will be held the beginning of the fall semester for BYU-I. The trailer will not be built for this year’s trebuchet competition. However, BYU-I would still like to use some engineers from our ASME section to judge the competition.
3.Karen attended the ASME District D meeting in June (she sent an email out on this a couple weeks ago). They are looking for a new District president and our Section will have two votes. No one at the meeting volunteered to run for the post although Karen, Steve, and Ed were all mentioned as strong candidates.
4.Donation to Telford School. A couple weeks ago Karen sent an email discussing the possibility of our Section donating $500 to Telford School to help them buy some software to enable them to conduct question and answer contests. There was considerable discussion regarding whether we should figure out how to raise the entire $1700 - $1900 the school needs to supply 40 students before making the donation, or just raise what we can and let the Telford faculty apply for grant money for the rest of the amount. Consensus was to give Fred and Nathan a chance to see how much Areva and Diversified can contribute. Karen, Fred, Nathan, & James will confer in the next week or so to finalize the total donation amount (Areva + Diversified + ASME). If that total amount is less than the ~$1800 needed (which is likely), we will need to revisit this topic at our August meeting to reach consensus on whether we should give them what we have raised or figure out how to fund the remainder.
5.Brian Kanen agreed to act as a liaison to the ISU student section. In the past we have not had success establishing a good working relationship with the student section there. Brian was the ISU student section chair last year, so he has a good understanding of the dynamics of that section. Brian informed the group that the ISU student section chair for the coming school year is Abel Ortiz. Brian will contact Abel once the fall semester is underway.
6.James provided a financial report for the past fiscal year, July 2009 - June 2010. We had a profitable year primarily due to the two ASME Code courses offered.
7.Dave hosted a tour of MFC facilities - HFEF and FCF - for BYU-I students on June 24. 15 students attended. The student leader sent a nice thank you note stating how useful and interesting the tour was.
8.Karen hosted a resume critique for INL interns on July 8. 48 interns signed up. Each received feedback and advice on how to improve his/her resume from one of six reviewers. Karen recruited INL and Walsh Engineering management types (folks who regularly peruse applicant's resumes) to do the critiquing. ASME provided pizza and soft drinks for the event. Exit comments from interns at the event indicate it was a very useful and appreciated event.
9.Nathan suggested we hold some kind of event specifically for early career engineers in the area. We agreed to develop that concept further at the next monthly meeting.
10.Ed will discuss preparations for the national level E-Week 2011 program at next month's meeting.

Discussion Items:
1.Steve said the instructor for the Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing course will not be available until the week of Aug 23rd. The committee thought this week would probably be acceptable since the local school districts will be back in session. However there was some concern as to whether a University Place classroom would be available.

Assignment: Steve will contact University Place to verify class room availability.
2.2010 Trebuchet contest planning. Karen said there will be a design review for the high schools participating on June 18th. BYU-I has continued their efforts to modify their trebuchet for automatic loading using a renewable energy source. They are planning on using a small diesel engine to drive a hydraulic pump. Last month we agreed to support them on the order of $1K - $2K. They have obtained a diesel engine from an incoming student and the committee agreed to pay $200 for it. Also the committee agreed to provide a $100 cash prize for BYU-I’s contest to design a trailer for the trebuchet.
3.ISU student relations. We discussed how we might best support the ISU student chapter. Ali said he would talk to Dr. Brian Williams about this.
4.Dave discussed the upcoming tour of the MFC hot cells for BYU-I students. The tour will take place June 24th and leave at 12:30pm from the EROB building in Idaho Falls.
5.Dave said he was contacted by Greg Roach (our BYU-I faculty rep) who asked it we have any ASME members with experience in writing proposals for grants. This person would sit on the board of directors of a BYU-I research center.

Assignment: Karen will contact Kevin Mclean and see if he knows anyone with grant writing experience.
6.E-week. ASME is the sponsor for national E-week in 2012. Karen and Ed Harvago are on the planning committee for this. They are hopeful that Battelle Memorial will be the corporate sponsor.
7.Ken attended an ASME pre-college meeting, which was a meeting for developing methods of encouraging high school and middle school students to consider engineering as a career. He presented highlights of our efforts to work with rural schools – particularly the trebuchet contest. This group has produced a “Heroes of Engineering” backdrop which we could borrow for our interactions with middle and high school students. Ken also has a grant to manufacture a traveling booth that illustrates the joys and glories of engineering. Karen suggested that we use the booth and/or backdrop during the September 22nd trebuchet contest.
8.We’ve worked with Telford school in the past (the first trebuchet) and we promised to provide them a small grant. We have the grant form and the committee agreed we could give them at least $100, but we would like to specify the money be used for something specific – probably something technical like calculators.

Discussion Items:
1.The Idaho Section’s annual dinner meeting was held April 30th at the Whitewater Grill building. We all felt it was a great success. The meal was good, the presentations were good, and the attendance was good. The total cost was around $1600. There was some discussion as to whether we should try to have a dinner meeting more than once a year. The general consensus was that, for now, the once-a-year format is working well and we’ll stick with it unless a special event/speaker might warrant an additional dinner meeting.

David Duncan unable to attend monthly meeting but added by email "only one add for the minutes...... agree with everything on the annual dinner meeting except need to say that the room was too small....... .too many tables, chairs and people for the room size....having it at CAES much better idea ......"
2.Karen reported on the Professional Development Day held April 15th. It was well attended and the sponsors ended up making a little money on it. The PDD sponsors are planning on having another day in the fall and every six months thereafter. James Angell has been helping PDD with their accounting and this may be more effort than he bargained for.
3.Steve said he would still like to try and hold the Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing class this year. We’re thinking about pushing it out to the July time frame.

Assignment: Steve will contact University Place and ASME to verify class room and instructor availability.
4.2010 Trebuchet contest. The main twist on the contest this year is that the trebuchet weights must be raised using some form of renewable energy. Karen is going to tour the rural high schools Salmon, Mackey, Challis, etc to drum up enthusiasm. BYU-I is planning on being involved again (they’re already working on their design) and we’re committed to working with them. The Section will probably be able to cover material costs which should be on the order of $1K - $2K. Someone suggested that the U of I may be will to donate a few pieces of hydraulic equipment in exchange for some advertising space on the trebuchet.
5.Last year Idaho passed a law requiring engineers to take 30 Professional Development Hours every two years. We are supposed to maintain records of how we fulfill this requirement in case of audit. Fred found an internet site that allows engineers to set up a basic account and keep track of their hours for free. This site also has information as to what counts as legitimate PDH. The site is: http://www.rcep.net.
6.According to our Section by-laws we are to choose new officers each spring. We will send an email out in the next few days with proposed officers for the next year.

Discussion Items:
1.The Idaho Section’s annual dinner meeting will be held April 30th at the CAES building. The cost of the meal (and all other expenses) will be paid by the Section. All ASME members are invited and each member may bring a guest (whose meal will also be free). The evening will consist of a social beginning at 6:00pm, followed by dinner at 6:30pm, and then the program starting at 7pm. The keynote speaker will be Fred Gunnerson. There will also be two or three student speakers, demonstrations of a material sorter and Baja vehicle produced at BYU-I as part of a contest, and a video of the trebuchet in action.

Assignments: Steve Reese – Put notice in iNotes, ask Fred Gunnerson for title of his talk, ask Gunnerson where in CAES would be best for his talk, provide Joe with words for Gunnerson’s lifetime achievement plaque. Joe Palmer – Get plaque for Gunnerson.
2.The ASME Section XI Code class held in March was very successful. The Section netted about $12.5K from this effort.
3.Previously we had decided to attempt two ASME training classes this year. We were looking at Introduction to FEA, or Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing. The attendees felt the GD and T class would have the broadest appeal. Tentatively we are looking at early June for this class. The class can be taken as either a 2 day fundamentals or a 4 day class with more extensive applications; i.e., our class would run 4 days, but attendees have the option of only attending the first 2 days and receiving credit from ASME for those 2 days.

Assignment: Steve will contact ASME to verify instructor availability.
4.Karen updated us on the Professional Development day being held April 15th. A primary objective of this seminar is to get people to think about career options. About 60 have signed up so far.
5.Nate reported on the ASME Leadership Training Course he attended in Dallas. He said there was a strong international presence among the attendees. Some of the topics were general leadership skills, strategies for increasing activity in the sections, and branding strategies.
6.Karen explained a little about Engineering for Change. Discussion Items:
1.Ed Harvego went to Washington, DC for e-week an was a judge for the Future Cities competition. There were 40 student teams there. They had a great time and some students from the winning teams were able to talk to President Obama as well as astronauts in the space lab! The school districts in Boise, ID have promoted Future Cities the best of any city in the nation and there were several teams from the Boise area. Ed and Karen are on the national Future Cities planning committee for 2012.
2.The tour of Idaho Brewing held February 10th was very successful and attracted about 50 people. We had a lot of positive comments from the attendees.
3.Fred got a new banner for our Section and delivered it during the brewery tour. It is a heavy all-weather vinyl banner with the new ASME logo and we’ll display it during our activities throughout the year.
4.Bryan (from the BYU-I student section) said they would like to display the new banner during their end-of-year banquet. They’d also like to have a speaker from the Section.
5.Karen reported on the Engineering Ethics in Action Webinar held February 18th. About seven engineers signed up locally. The case studies were related to Toyota’s recent troubles. This webinar was worth one Professional Development Hour (PDH) and Ken pointed out that many of the activities the Section sponsors are worth one PDH. ASME has a link on their web page that explains rules for PDHs.
6.Nate and Ed are attending the ASME Leadership Training Course in Dallas later this month and they will report in next month’s meeting. Their expenses are being picked up by ASME National and our Idaho Section.
7.We have 16 registrants for our ASME Section XI Code Course being held March 22 – 25. Break even for this course is 11, so the Section will make a good profit. Section members help setup refreshments and cleanup afterwards. The following schedule was established for setup and cleanup.

Set Up: Around 7am. Steve will pre-order all items from Fred Meyer.
Clean Up: After lunch (probably during a break)
8.Karen reported on another Professional Development Day scheduled for 4/15 at the Hilton. It will cover negotiation skills. They have a web site up but more advertising is needed.
9.We will have our awards banquet again this year in May (maybe the 7th). Fred Gunnerson has agreed to speak and will talk about the past and future of nuclear energy. Dr. Gunnerson is retiring and we plan on giving him a plaque. The student poster presentations worked well last year and we’d like to have them again this year – approximately five (5 – 10 minute) student presentations.
10.Ali talked about the annual USU Physics Day at Lagoon. He’s been involved with this for over 20 years and it’s grown into a very large event. Approximately 6000 students and 400 teachers will attend. There will be various competitions and judges are needed. Our Section can also set up a table (with our new banner) if we’d like. Here’s the link with more details on this event: http://physicsday.usu.edu

Discussion Items:
1.Our Section’s web page has been updated recently by the professional web designer we hired. Please have a look at it and provide recommendations. Here is the link: http://sections.asme.org/Idaho/.
2.We previously decided to hold two code courses this year. The first is for ASME Section XI and will be held mid to late March (this is spring break for ISU and U of I and we should be able to get a room at University Place). The second course will be Introduction to FEA and will probably be held in late May

Assignment: Steve will contact ASME to verify an instructor is available in March for the Section XI course.
3.On January 11th we will be hosting a video linked meeting between our section and the Treasure Valley section. The speaker will be Dr. Carl Austin and the topic will be Geothermal Energy (see our web site for more details). We will meet in Room 350a in the Tingey Administration Bldg. at University Place and pizza will be provided.

Assignment: Steve will get the pizza and drinks. Ken will check with Judi Steciak to see if there are any handouts to be printed ahead of time.
4.We briefly discussed the ASME Leadership Training Course which will be held in a hotel at the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport March 12 – 13. ASME national will pay for one attendee and our Section will pay for at least one more.

Assignment: Joe will let Steve know whether he can go. Steve will contact Nathan McMasters to see if he can go.
5.The proposed tour of Idaho Brewing was discussed. We plan on not only taking a tour but having some light snacks catered as well. The BYU Idaho student reps said they thought as many as 20 students would like to attend. The date for this tour was tentatively set for 2/2/2010.

Assignment: In the last meeting Karen and Ali mentioned different possibilities for the caterer. Please consult with each other and Steve and settle on one. Steve will contact Mr. Wolf at Idaho Brewing, confirm the date, and ask if any age limits apply.
6.Karen attended a presentation at Premier Technologies where they recognized Salmon High School for constructing the best trebuchet in the high school division. For this fall’s competition Karen said the schools will be reusing their trebuchets, but they will be required to lift the weight using some type of renewable energy. Our Section expects to be part of the competition again and we will again work with BYU-I students. We expect to kick this off in the April/May time frame.
7.Dave asked Brian, the BYU-I Student Section Rep, what types of INL facilities the students would be most interested in touring. Brian said they were most interested in the robotics lab and general purpose research labs. Karen offered IRC lab C20 as a good example of a research lab.
8.The application deadline for the annual Idaho section college scholarship was set: Saturday, April 17, 2010.
9.Engineers Week was briefly discussed.

Assignment: Fred Yapuncich will consult with the EIEC and find out what the status of planning for the annual E-Week banquet.
